In the struggle against hatred in our society, local charitable organisations such as Europia are on the front lines.
The vast majority of hate crimes are racially motivated, and the UK’s vote to leave the European Union in May of 2016 saw a sharp spike in the number of incidents. Looking forwards, we do not yet know whether the process of leaving will act as a pressure valve on tensions, or whether they will be intensified. What we do know is that hate crimes are grossly under-reported.
Because of this, strategies for tackling hate crime at both national and regional levels are focused on the way in which Third Party Reporting Centres – community-level charities and organisations such as Europia – can be supported and encouraged to play a role in reporting and responding to hate crimes.
